Student Discipline Issues and Considerations for Students with Disabilities

Since schools are required to provide all students with disabilities a free appropriate education (FAPE), administration must ensure that disciplinary interventions do not prevent them from receiving it. Schools must be able to determine whether the disability is related to the behavior. In addition, schools must ensure that students with disabilities experience equitable consequences for their behaviors. Schools must determine any decision on a case-by-case basis to change the placement of a student for behavioral reasons. (Smith, 2016).
